UPHOLSTERY CLEANING CODES
With hundreds of different types of fabrics, textures, and fibers available to furniture manufacturers, it is important to understand which types of cleaning will be the most effective for your furniture type.
That is why each manufacturer will provide a tag equipped with a code that will identify which cleaning methods are best. Typically found under the center cushion these codes provide valuable insight into the best way for the upholstery to be cleaned.
When spills are immediately addressed, they typically do not do much damage to your carpets. When dirt or spills remain exposed to your carpet however, it can cause permanent staining or cause bending of the carpet fibers.
There are only a few types of cleaning codes and will fall under the following categories:
W: Fabric that responds well to water-based solutions or foams, cleaning this type of upholstery using water is ideal. At Steam Squad, we make sure to only use distilled water in lieu of tap, since tap water can contain minerals that can lead to the formation of rings or facilitate fabric fading.
Fabrics under this code are typically man-made and include polyester and nylon.
S: The S code reflects fabrics that cannot use water. Only mild, dry cleaning solvents should be used, and the avoidance of water
would be ideal.
X: Very rare, these codes typically reflect fragile fibers that would be found in drapes, curtains, or fabric blinds. In these situations, we would simply use a vacuum cleaner on a gentle cycle to remove any accumulated dust or particulates.
